Shatkarma

What is Shatkarma?

Imagine your body as a house you live in. It is your first and most important home. Over time, just like a house collects dust, your body and mind gather waste, fatigue, and emotional load. Shatkarma is like giving that house a gentle but thorough clean.

Rooted in ancient yogic wisdom, Shatkarma kriya is a group of six time-tested practices meant to clear out the things we don’t need such as extra mucus, stuck thoughts, poor digestion, mental fog. It’s not about doing something extreme or dramatic. It’s quiet, deep, and thoughtful work done slowly and with full attention.

These techniques have been passed down through centuries not as rituals, but as ways to feel lighter, think clearer, and breathe easier. Shatkarma in Ayurveda is also seen as a first step toward healing, where a clean body supports better absorption of food, thought, and life itself.

There are six types of Shatkarma:

  • Neti clears the nasal passages
  • Dhauti washes the stomach
  • Nauli massages the inner belly
  • Basti cleans the colon
  • Trataka sharpens the gaze and stills the mind
  • Kapalabhati energises through breath

You may already be doing a few of these without knowing they come from this tradition.

The benefits of Shatkarma go beyond hygiene. When done gently and regularly, you may feel your sleep deepen, your digestion calm, your breath open up, and your thinking get clearer. It’s like returning to a lighter version of yourself—physically, emotionally, spiritually.
